We all want to live long, healthy, and productive lives. Unfortunately, illness, injuries, and accidents can happen at any moment and cause devastating changes in our lives. One life-changing consequence of a disability is being unable to work and earn an income.
That’s where disability benefits come in. These are monthly payments made to people whose disability claim has been approved by the Social Security Administration.
When we refer to conditions that automatically qualify you for disability benefits, we don’t mean it in literal terms, it just means that certain conditions get faster approval for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
Here is the list of conditions as found in the SSA’s Blue Listings:
1. Musculoskeletal Disorders
Musculoskeletal disorders are among the highly prioritized conditions for Social Security disability insurance. These are disorders or injuries of muscles, joints, nerves, spinal discs, and other connective tissues.
They include fibromyalgia, Lou Gehrig’s disease, scoliosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and back and neck pain. Musculoskeletal conditions severely limit movement and are often accompanied by persistent pain making it hard for people to function in a work environment.
2. Respiratory Disorders
Respiratory disorders, also known as lung diseases can cause breathing problems, chest pain, and chronic fatigue. Cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, respiratory system cancers, and complications from lung transplantation are some of the conditions in this category.
3. Mental Disorders
Adults and children living with mental disorders that affect memory and cognitive functioning also automatically qualify for a disability claim. These disorders include schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
4. Digestive Disorders
If you suffer from a digestive system-related cancer or a digestive disorder that limits your ability to hold down a job, you may be eligible for SSDI benefits. Your disability benefits lawyer can review your case and proceed with the application process so you can receive the support you need to live a quality life.
5. Cardiovascular Disorders
Any congenital or acquired disorder that affects the proper functioning of the heart or circulatory system automatically qualifies you for disability benefits. Common conditions in this category include chronic heart failure, stroke, heart attack, peripheral vascular disease, and arrhythmia.
6. Blindness, Low Vision, and Deafness
If your vision cannot be corrected to better than 20/200 than the better eye, you’re considered blind and therefore, eligible for both SSDI and SSI benefits. If you’re profoundly deaf or hard of hearing, you may also be eligible to benefit from the SSDI or SSI programs. You can also work and continue receiving your disability benefits if your income does not exceed the amount set by law.
7. Physical Disability
Some physical injuries leave temporary or permanent disabilities and can be considered for Social Security disability insurance. They include traumatic brain injury, spinal cord trauma, burns, limb injuries, and amputation.
