How to file for Social Security Disability

social security disability attorney

If you find yourself in a situation where you need to apply for Social Security Disability, but the thought of doing so seems too stressful or overwhelming, here is an easy step-by-step guide you can follow to help you get started.

Before you apply, make sure that your work history consists of jobs covered by Social Security, and that your medical condition falls under the Social Security’s definition of disability. You can find out if you qualify by calling or visiting your local Social Security office.

First, you will need to file an application from the Social Security Administration either by phone, online, or in person. Here is a link to the online application. Once you are granted an application, you will then be scheduled an interview either over the phone or in person at the Social Security office. If you run into any trouble you can call the SSA toll free at 1-800-772-1213.

Information You Will Need To Apply

To help make the application process as easy and quick as possible, make sure to have the following information on hand about yourself:

  • Social Security number and proof of age;
  • Names, addresses and all other contact information of the doctors and facilities that took care of you, as well as the dates of your visits;
  • Names and details of all medications you are taking;
  • Lab and test results;
  • A summary of your work history and descriptions of the type of work you performed and
  • Your most recent W-2 form, or a copy of your federal tax return if you were self-employed.

Also make sure to have the following information on hand about your family members:

  • Proof of marriage, if your spouse is applying for benefits.
  • Social Security number and proof of age for each family member who may qualify for benefits.

If Your Application Is Denied

Keep in mind that nationwide, an average of 7 out of 10 disability applications are denied at the initial application stage, so if you happen to be 1 of those 7, don’t let it discourage you. If you are denied you will need to file one or more appeals to Supplemental Security Income either online or in person. You also may call their toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, to request your appeal.
